London 2012

The London 2012 Games will be a fantastic sporting and human adventure during which the Group will provide its expertise in electricity production and will continue to show its commitment towards its customers, partners and young people.
EDF is developing several initiatives that are linked to the themes of energy and sport.

A programme aimed towards young people

  • In France, EDF is working with its partner associations: Réseau Ecoles de la 2ème Chance (an association that helps young people to re-enter the education system) and Secours Populaire (a voluntary organisation working to reduce poverty and social exclusion). In 2012, a number of energy awareness initiatives will be organised, giving almost 150 young people aged between 11-25 years old, the opportunity to attend a sports events in London during the 2012 Games.
  • In the UK, EDF's subsidiary, EDF Energy has set-up "The Pod" - an interactive website for schools that explores the theme of sustainable development and is closely linked to the London 2012 Games. The Pod now has over 14,500 registered schools and aims to make real and measurable difference to the energy usage and carbon output of schools across the UK and to provide practical support, activities and materials for teachers. So far, over 5.5 million young people have been engaged through the Pod.
The company also supports Legacy Champions programme - a London 2012 inspired initiative that helps develop a community and environmental legacy for the Games. EDF employees are working with participating students on legacy projects in the London boroughs that are hosting events during the London Games.

Promoting sport for all

As a long-standing partner of the French Federation of Disability Sport (Fédération Française Handisport - FFH), EDF has supported the development and promotion of disabled sports for more than 20 years. Each year, EDF and the FFH organise the EDF Disabled Sports Meeting which aims to raise awareness of disability sport among the general public by promoting different sports disciplines through demonstration and the opportunity to meet Paralympic athletes.

EDF also contributes to the development and popularity of water sports through its support for major events such as the EDF Swimming Open , an international competition which brings together the world's best swimmers.
In the UK, EDF Energy has been working with Paralympics GB to help their pre-Games training camp set a new standard for sustainability. The aim is to get athletes, coaches and the wider public thinking more carefully about how they use energy and become champions of sustainability in their own communities.
