The ultimate low-carbon energy source, water is at the heart of EDF’s role as an energy specialist and supplier. This is why we have decided to promote water sports, highly demanding Olympic disciplines that require energy, fighting spirit, courage, and self-sacrifice.

A long-term commitment to water sports

We contribute tothe development and popularity of water sports in supporting majorevents such as the EDF Swimming Open, an international competitionwhich each year brings together the world’s best swimmers.

In addition, we support sporting champions such as Alain Bernard, Hugues Duboscq, and Coralie Balmy for swimming and Tony Estanguet and Fabien Lefevrefor canoeing. We also facilitate the vocational integration ofworld-ranked athletes within our Group in enabling them to reconcilethe competing demands of a sporting career and their professionallives. Currently 15 top-level athletes are EDF employees, including Jean Christophe Bette, an Olympic champion, and the new 2009 rowing world champion and Olympic champion Adrien Hardy.

Lastly, given the close relationship with our business and particularlyhydro production, the Group contributes its expertise to the managementof water resources across France via, for example, the creation ofwater rapids enabling canoeing and kayaking. The Pagaies Couleursteaching initiative developed in partnership with the French canoeingand kayaking federation (FFCK) aims to raise awareness within theFrench canoe-kayaking community about safety and the environment andits preservation.

The EDF Group also demonstrates its commitment to water sportsviasustainability initiatives at both local and regional level, suchasthe Nuit de l'Eau and Nagez grandeur Nature, annual events organised inpartnership with the French swimming federation around the water theme,or Randon’ Aviron’,a canoeing tour in cooperation with the Frenchcanoeing and kayakingfederation, which gives participants theopportunity to learn more aboutFrance's natural and cultural heritage.
