Energy use innovation

We are convinced that electricity is an asset in the fight against climate change. This means developing new electricity usages, modest in energy and carbon, as well as aiming at moderating the energy consumption of existing uses.
A hybrid, rechargeable electric vehicle: one of the projects supported by EDF to reduce CO2 emissions.

High-temperature heat pumps

We have developed a high-performance air/water heat pump in partnership with the German industrialist Stiebel Eltron. This heats an individual home with substantial energy savings. A perfect alternative to fuel oil furnaces, and with a sleek and compact design, it can easily be connected to the existing heating system. In addition, we offer remote control with remote maintenance. We are continuing work to make the pumps smaller and reduce their cost.

Electric and rechargeable hybrid cars

EDF is promoting the development of electric vehicles and rechargeable hybrids that save on energy and produce little CO2. The partnership concluded with Toyota in 2007 for the trial of the rechargeable hybrid car Prius is ongoing and has even been extended to the UK, where EDF Energy is testing a vehicle. This operation relies on another partnership created with the recharging station manufacturer Elektromotive , through which our company EDF Energy will contribute to developing these terminals by supplying the energy necessary for them to operate. In 2008, EDF established two new partnerships, one with Renault-Nissan and the other with PSA Peugeot-Citroën to develop electric and rechargeable hybrid vehicles.

Decentralized electricity generation

New decentralized electricity generation methods (wind energy, photovoltaic, and biomass micro-generation) enable our customers to become energy producers themselves. We are convinced that the energy system of tomorrow will combine centralized and decentralized energies to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. We are preparing for this: our R&D teams participate in research into batteries, different load models, and grids and their smart management (smart grids). They also work on electricity storage means: a major challenge for the energy of the future.
