EDF - Biodiversity

We have established three core objectives to limit the effect of our businesses on ecosystems:

1. Enhance our understanding of the natural environment to better assess potential impacts on ecosystems,
2. Preserve and protect plant and animal life,
3. Inform and train our employees and local communities, and foster dialogue with experts, particularly NGOs (non governmental organizations).

Thus:

• For 20 years, the aquatic ecosystems surrounding all nuclear power plants in France have been systematically monitored.
• EDF is contributing to the national effort to restore migratory fish species and is investing in research on, design of, and reporting on fish passes. Close to 80 fishways have been built over the past 20 years with proven results, monitored by a number of associations (Logrami, Migado and Migradour). Furthermore, EDF is defining optimum compensation water and improving its knowledge of the impacts of sudden water flows and can now limit their amplitude.
• Our commitment to biodiversity is exemplified by numerous local actions conducted in partnership: maintenance or restoration of natural spaces near to the sites, raising public awareness.
• The EDF group has entered into a partnership with the French Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest network for environmental protection, through which EDF contributed to the publication of the Red List of Endangered Species.
• In Hungary, Demasz has mapped the areas where its network is most dangerous for birds and designed a system to protect 97% of birdlife in these areas.
